Showerhead masturbation scenes in movies and on TV are popular for a reason, and not simply for their titillating effect. Think the seductive 80s flick Two Moon Junction, and more recently in an episode of Two Broke Girls and the 2013 film Stoker.

Art imitates real life.

Many women report the first place they ever masturbated was in the shower, according to market research conducted by Womanizer, an international pleasure product brand best known for its air-pulsating clitoral stimulators.

In total, 60% of women worldwide said they had masturbated in the shower or bathtub, with close to a third (29%) saying they did so twice a week. 41% reported their first time masturbating happened before they turned 18.

To cater to this large demographic of adults seeking sensual shower experiences, Womanizer teamed up with Hansgrohe, a leading shower head manufacturer. Together they developed the Womanizer Wave, which they claim is the first and best hand held shower head for masturbation on the market.

What is the Womanizer Wave?

The Womanizer Wave showerhead masturbator comes in black, white, and chrome.

The Womanizer Wave shower head for masturbation joins showering and personal stimulation in one device. With its ergonomic sex toy design and three water jets—Pleasure Jet, Pleasure Whirl, and Powder Rain—users can explore different levels of stimulation for a customized experience.

It also allows for one-handed control thanks to a slider button that selects the intensity level. Available in chrome, black, and white, the Womanizer Wave is crafted from durable ABS materials.

Elisabeth Neumann, a Sexologist and the Head of User Research at Womanizer, said that by incorporating self-pleasure features into an everyday object, their design aims to break the taboo on talking about masturbation.

“By leveraging the power of water, anyone can now enjoy a fully immersive and satisfying self-pleasure experience in the privacy of their own shower,” she said.

“Womanizer Wave represents a significant step forward in the de-stigmatization of masturbation, as it normalizes and incorporates this healthy sexual practice into our daily lives.”

The company also boasts that the Womanizer Wave is one of the most resource-efficient handheld shower heads for masturbation in the bathtub or shower.

According to an email response from Hansgrohe to SexForEveryBody.com, its EcoSmart technology plays a significant role in conserving resources and saving money. For overhead and hand showers, water consumption can be reduced to as low as 8 litres per minute.

To ensure consistent performance and a powerful water jet, even with varying water pressure, a “precision elastomer” is used. It restricts the flow and helps save water from the tap.

As a result, the shower maintains a constant flow, even when the water pressure is low or fluctuates.

This reduction in water usage also leads to lower hot water consumption, resulting in decreased energy costs and reduced CO2 emissions.

Break up with your shower head?

While Womanizer kicked off June by releasing its Womanizer Wave shower head for masturbation, the UK-based Love Not War took a different tack.

Emphasizing their commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly sex toys, Love Not War launched a campaign encouraging consumers to part ways with their shower heads.

Their posters boldly declared, “Break up with your shower head. Save water, switch to a sustainable sex toy.” It highlighted the environmental impact of water wastage while promoting more sustainable alternatives for masturbation.

Specifically, the sexual wellness brand featured its own sex toys alongside a 20% discount.

Love Not War sex toys are rechargeable, waterproof, and modular in design.

Each sex toy consists of two parts: the base and the head. The detachable vibrator heads can be interchanged with other heads within the brand’s product range, allowing users to enjoy the versatility of multiple toys in one.

This design reduces waste, according to CEO and Co-Will Ranscombe, by eliminating the need to purchase multiple complete toys and allows users to mix and match different heads according to their preferences.

“When it comes to sex, we know that wetter is better. It’s better for us anyway, but perhaps not when it comes to our planet. Our primary focus is on pleasure—but orgasms shouldn’t cost the Earth.”

In its marketing materials, Love Not War estimates 300 million litres of water is wasted each year because of shower head masturbation. For comparison, that’s enough water to fill nearly 121 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

This water consumption estimate was, in part, based on research in a 2012 article published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. In a survey of Portuguese women on their masturbation habits, nearly a quarter reported (23%) they had used a shower head for self-pleasure.

More statistics about masturbation in the shower came from a 2020 survey of more than 1,000 British and American respondents by QS Supplies online bathroom warehouse. Results revealed:

  • One in 20 respondents said they had masturbated in the shower.
  • 51% of men and 28% of women also said they’ve masturbated in the shower.
